Cats are a bit of a law unto themselves, aren’t they? Their psychology is so different from simple creatures like dogs and humans, as is their whole physiology. They are different and need to be treated differently both emotionally and medically! It’s not for nothing that there is the old saying that ‘Dogs have owners, Cats just have staff…’ Many cats will go through very sheltered and protected lives, progressing gently from mewling little kittens to sleepy old age with little to concern them. Life is a series of food bowls, litter trays and happy hours spent gazing out of the window or curled up asleep in bed. Indoor life poses them little threat from injury or infectious diseases such as Cat Flu or Feline Leukaemia. Cats who have access to the outside world are exposed to a much wider range of excitements and possible threats, whether it be fights with the local tough guy or contact with contagious disease. We can supply a wide range of supplements that can help support the immune system and healing process in cases of illness or injury. As the years go by there are a number of health problems that can arise. ‘Adult’ soon turns into ‘mature adult’ (or senior as we used to call them before that was deemed too age-ist) and the old age disease of cats. Kidney disease, with increased thirst, poor appetite and weight loss is one of the more common problems. We also see many cases of hyperthyroidism – caused by over active thyroid glands – with its hyperactivity, ravenous appetite and weight loss and heart problems such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where the heart wall becomes thickened and cannot beat efficiently. In old age cancer (neoplasia) is never far away. Regular health checks, a good diet and suitable supplements can make all the difference. Some of the real old soldiers can start to show signs of senile behaviour with loss of toilet training, unusual or erratic behaviour and restlessness. Don’t give up on them! Our understanding of geriatric medicine is progressing all the time and we now are able to support and treat many of these older patients.
