Fleas & External Parasites

Itch. Scratch. Itch. Stand up, turn around, lick. Scratch.

And there’s a sore patch on the skin. The other cat has now started too. Uh-oh, I think I’m a bit itchy as well, come to think of it. And what are those little red bumps around my ankles?

Argh!! We’ve got FLEAS!

We need action, RIGHT NOW, before this gets completely out of hand!

Fleas can now be a year round problem, thanks to central heating, comfortable houses and our love of pets…but help is at hand. You can order 100% safe non-prescription Frontline Spot On flea drops for cats PLUS a spray such as Indorex , as Staykill or Acclaim for your home that will prevent any more of the little critters from breeding

Adult cat fleas (scientific name ctenocephalides felis) don’t actually live for very long. The average life span is just 3 weeks, but during that time the female fleas will lay up to 50 eggs a day, and amazingly enough that can make up to 1000 eggs in one short life.

Under ideal conditions (a warm house with carpets, pets and people) eggs can go through their full life cycle to larvae, pupae and hatching out into new adults in as little as 3 weeks, making for a rapid population explosion if we don’t take rapid and early action.

Equally, if it is too cold, dry or quiet they can lay dormant for up to a year, hatching out when the weather warms up or even when they start to detect more movement around them. Just when you thought you’d sorted out your flea infestation….

Fleas can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and nasty skin sores if cats start to lick themselves excessively in an attempt to rid themselves of these parasites. Fleas can carry one stage of the lifecycle of the common tapeworm, so where they have swallowed a flea whilst grooming, they can become infected. Some people are also unlucky enough to be attractive to fleas and sensitive to their bites.

Luckily we now have a wide range of different products to combat the problem.

Topical spot on preparation such as Frontline , Stronghold , Advantage , Pro-Meris and Advocate will over the course of 24 hours kill any fleas that are currently on your cat, and stay active in the coat for many weeks.

Capstar is taken as a pill by mouth, is rapidly absorbed and distributed in the blood and starts to kill fleas on your pet within minutes.

Birth control for fleas comes in the form of Program: taken by mouth or given by injection by your vet, this prescription medicine effectively stops the fleas from reproducing, preventing the population explosion that is the main problem.

Spray for the home such as Acclaim , Indorex , Staykill and Skoosh will kill any adult fleas currently present and prevent any more hatching out for a year or more.

No excuses any more – all these products are easily available – don’t hesitate to email us if you need any more advice
