Fleas & External Parasites

Fleas can be a year round problem for cats: they don’t actually live for very long (the average life span is just 3 weeks) but during that time females will lay up to 50 eggs a day, and that makes up to 1000 eggs in one short life.

Under ideal conditions (a warm house with carpets, pets and people) eggs can go through their full life cycle from eggs to larvae, pupae and new adults in as little as 3 weeks: a population explosion.

If the weather is too cold and dry, and there are few people or animals around, the eggs can lay dormant for up to a year before hatching out.

Fleas can cause skin irritation and local allergic reactions in cats. Scratching and licking at these can cause nasty skin sores and considerable discomfort. Fleas can also carry tapeworms, so cats can become infected with tapeworms by swallowing a flea whilst grooming. Some people are also unlucky enough to be attractive to fleas and sensitive to their bites.

Topical spot on preparation such as Frontline , Stronghold , Advantage , Pro-Meris and Advocate will over the course of 24 hours kill any fleas that are currently on your cat, and stay active in the coat for many weeks.

Capstar is taken as a pill by mouth, is rapidly absorbed and distributed in the blood and starts to kill fleas on your pet within minutes.

Program is a birth control system for fleas: taken by mouth or given by injection by your vet, this is now available without prescription and is a very effective way of preventing the population explosion.

Spray for the home such as Acclaim , Indorex , Staykill and Skoosh will kill any adult fleas currently present and prevent any more hatching out for a year or more.
