At Vetscriptions, we firmly believe in a holistic approach to our dog’s health. We use all that modern medicine and surgery has to offer, but know from experience that nutrition and nutritional supplements are the cornerstone of good health and vitality. Don’t forget, we are not just an on-line pharmacy, we are involved with keeping dogs fit and healthy as well as treating the sick and injured every day of the week.

You will find us talking a lot about nutraceuticals – these are food supplements with a health benefit. We use anti-oxidants, we add essential fatty acids to the food, and we supply herbal preparations where they are needed.

Luckily, most of our dogs stay healthy throughout their lives, charging on from furry bouncy puppies to grand old canine age without a care in the world and generally without too much veterinary intervention. All they seem to need is a good diet, plenty of exercise, regular worm and flea control, vaccines as necessary and a nice warm bed at the end of the day.

Some dogs are not quite so lucky and need a little help. This might simply take the form of regular vitamin and mineral supplements and anti-oxidants to keep them in tip-top health. According to work being carried out in Sweden and presented at the BSAVA conference in Birmingham yesterday, puppies born to litters where the mother has been fed on a diet of FRESH food rather than a commercial diet have a LOWER incidence of allergic disease later in life. Last year an American university speaker confirmed findings that raw food is less likely to provoke allergic reactions than cooked food. All of which tends to endorse our general support for BARF diets (Bones and Raw Food).

Outbreaks of Canine Parvovirus gastro-enteritis have been reported in the midlands and south-west of England. The disease is often fatal once contracted, whereas vaccination does generally give very good protection. Vets across the country continue to advise dog owners to make sure their dogs are fully protected against this disease. You can have your dog blood tested to see if they have enough antibodies to protect them from the disease - if they don't, go ahead and vaccinate them straight away
