Diarrhoea & Constipation in Dogs

Diarrhoea? Again? Are you fed up with your dog having the squits? Waking up to that awful smell? Do you find you need to be SO careful with what you feed just in case you set off another bout of the poops?

Most cases of simple diarrhoea will settle down within in 24 hours if you have the right symptomatic treatment on hand. Wouldn’t you like to be able to treat a simple tummy upset quickly and efficiently?

Digestive problems are very common in dogs. Many are natural scavengers, often with disastrous consequences, other simply can’t cope to well with the food we choose to feed them. You can order some Pro-Kolin right now and have it ready for the next time trouble starts. Think about adding a regular Probiotic such as Syn-Biotic Daily Capsules, to the food for more digestive stability. The Digestive or Gastro-Intestinal system of the dog is a long and complex organ system. For normal and efficient digestion, every part from the mouth to the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and rectum has to function correctly.

The necessary digestive enzymes must be produced in the saliva, in the gastric juices and from the pancreas. The liver has to produce and deliver bile at the right time, and the muscular activity of each part of the gut has to be co-ordinated. The resident gut population of billions of bacteria have to be in balance with each other and the lower parts of the bowel have to be able to re-absorb water and store the final product until it is ready for evacuation, on cue, when out for a walk.

Not really surprising that we, and every other veterinary practice in the known world, see a few cases of digestive upset now and again… Many of these cases are simple intoxication due to the dog's legendary desire to scavenge and eat totally unsuitable food material when out and about. Diarrhoea (and sometime vomiting) is the body's natural effort to get rid of the offending material as quickly as possible. Many of these cases settle in matter of hours without any outside help, but some do need medication. Our first line is often to re-establish the normal bacterial population in the gut, using Probiotics such as Promax, Pro-Kolin or Diarsanyl which all contain absorbent clays like kaolin or Montmorrillonite. Peridale granules absorb water and help regulate normal stool consistency. They can be used both to absorb excess water in cases of diarrhoea and to prevent excessive hardening of the faeces in constipation.

Dogs with persistently unstable digestion can benefit from regular probiotic supplements such as Syn-Biotic Daily Capsules, Lacto B or Bio-Premium. These all contain the bacteria that the body needs and help rapidly restore normal digestion.

Colaid from Vetplus is an excellent product to aid effective digestion, particularly in patients with long standing digestive problems. It combines the benefits of natural fructo-oligosaccharides with quercitin, ginger extract, amino acids and vitamins to help repair and restore the gut lining.

A lack of digestive enzymes from the pancreas, or Chronic Pancreatic Insufficiency is a common problem in some breeds of dog. Lypex , Panzym , Pancreatic Enzyme for Dogs & cats and Tryplase are just some of the pancreatic enzyme supplements used to correct this debilitating problem.
