Eye and Ear Medicines for Dogs

Why do they keep getting infected? I hate to see him scratching at them all the time and sometimes he whines as he does it. Actually he doesn’t really like us touching his head quite a lot of the time.

Maybe he’s just one of those dogs that naturally build up too much wax in their ears and you just aren’t cleaning his ears often enough. We see many cases of ear and eye problems in Dogs. The important issue for you as a dog owner is always 'Is this a serious problem, or something I can safely treat myself?'

Ear canals sometimes produce too much wax. The lining epithelium is just different type of skin, so if your dog has an inflammatory skin problem such as an allergy (for example Atopic Dermatitis, Atopy or Eczema) if would be normal to see inflammation in the ear canal. This in turn creates wax. If the ear canal is narrow, or slightly twisty or is too hairy, that wax cannot escape so easily and starts to build up. It becomes a focus for bacteria and yeasts and soon you have a smelly, thickened, waxy ear infection.

Treat soon! If there is wax, use an Ear Cleaner to clear the debris. Use it generously, both before and after exercise, to loosen the wax and allow both air and any medication needed to penetrate to the lining epithelium.

If there is pus, pain, any loss of balance or co-ordination, or an obvious bad smell, use an ear cleaner but make sure you visit your vet for a prescription medicine.

For eyes, the word conjunctivitis describes inflammation of the conjunctivae, the membranes surrounding the eyes. Sometimes this is due to infection, but in many cases it is simple irritation. In these cases it would be safe to use an eye wash such as CleanOcular and a lubricant.

It is vitally important that if there is pain (holding one or both eyes partly shut, avoiding bright lights), if your dog is rubbing at the eye or if there is a lot of yellow or green discharge, you should visit your vet without delay.

These can be symptoms of a corneal ulcer, of a conjunctivitis caused by bacterial infection or worse, of uveitis, which is a more generalised and serious inflammation of the eye.
