Older Dogs

Did you know that a recent study showed that nearly 25% of dogs over 9 years old showed signs of senile behaviour?

What exactly do we mean by that?
The technical term is 'Cognitive Impairment'. This is a bit more serious than what we politely refer to as senior moments when it happens to our parents or, heaven forbid, us.

In Dogs this means that 25% of dogs over the age of 9 show identifiable changes in their patterns of sleeping and waking, their social interactions, learning and house training together with signs of disorientation.

Old Age presents its own special problems as body tissues become tired and worn. Kidney function deteriorates causing uraemia, the liver is less able to detoxify the blood, the heart and circulation are less able to respond to demand and arthritis starts as the joints wear and the muscles stiffen. As the immune system becomes less efficient, the likelihood of one of the cancers becoming a problem increases.

But this doesn't all need to be a disaster story. We recommend Vitamin and especially Mineral supplements in all our older patients. In renal failure, phosphate binders such as Ipakitine can help reduce dietary availability of phosphate. Specific anti oxidants and hepatic nutraceuticals help support ageing livers, and a tired old heart can find extra reserves of energy with the addition of and L-Carnitine and and CoEnzyme Q10.
The benefits of adding and Glucosamine and Chondroitin to the diet are well known, and we now routinely supplement our senior dogs with and DiMethyl Glycine and and Mycoplex Coriolus.

Make sure your pet has enough Vitamin C, E and folic acid for healthy blood cells and nerves. Vitamin B12 helps keep brain function going, and L-carnitine helps with oxygen transport to the body's cells.
