Dog Wormers

Intestinal parasites or worms are common in dogs, and it is normal for puppies to pick up roundworms from their mothers both in the womb and then from her milk.

Puppies with heavy infestations of intestinal roundworms (Toxacara species) may be slow growing, skinny with a pot belly and may have persistant diarrhoea or breathing problems.

Adult dogs rarely show signs of worm infestation, but they can still excrete infective worm eggs in their faeces, and this is a human health risk - up to a hundred children in the UK each year have eye problems due infection with dog worm larvae (Ocular Larva Migrans).

Puppies should be wormed using products such as Drontal, Panacur, Wormazole or Granofen , Dolpac or Plerion every 2-4 weeks up until 6 months of age and thereafter at least once every 3 months. Dogs that scavenge and particularly those in areas with sheep farming, may need to be wormed monthly throughout their lives. The breeding bitch should be wormed during pregnancy to minimise the spread of worms to their puppies.

Lungworm in dogs is now infecting dogs regularly in the UK, especially in the southern counties.
The common red fox seems to be the main carrier of the disease, with as many as 25% of foxes in the south being infected. Garden slugs and snails then carry the infection and pass it on to dogs when they eat them or lick where they have been (eg scavenged food). Infection with lungworm is potentially fatal and can be difficult to spot in the early stages. Later and more serious signs of infection include coughing, difficulty breathing, weakness and sudden uncontrollable internal bleeding.
Prescription medicines such as Advocate (Imidacloprid/Moxidectin) are effective against lungworm and should be given routinely each month.
