Dog Wormers
Intestinal parasites or worms are common in domestic dogs. It is normal for puppies to pick up roundworms from their mothers both in the womb and then from her milk, so we routinely worm both the breeding bitch and her litters of puppies to minimise the transmission from one generation to the next.
Our current reccommendation is that puppies are wormed every 2-4 weeks up until 6 months of age and thereafter at least once every 3 months. Dogs that scavenge and particularly those in areas with sheep farming, may need to be wormed monthly throughout their lives.
Puppies with heavy infestations of intestinal roundworms (Toxacara species) may be slow growing, skinny with a pot belly and may have persistant diarrhoea or breathing problems. Whilst the worms themselves remain in the intestine, developing larvae can spread through other body tissues, forming cysts there which can hatch out sometimes years later when the dog is under physiological stress (illness or more commonly, pregnancy). This can then lead to active infection again.
In adulthood, it is rare to see health problems in the dog itself due to worm infestation, but they are capable of excreting infective roundworm eggs in their faeces. These can be a human health risk - it is estimated that up to a hundred children in the UK each year have eye problems due ingested worm larvae settling in the eye (the technical term is Ocular Larva Migrans), so we strongly advise regular worming even if your dog seems perfectly healthy.
It was not that long ago that lungworm in dogs was considered to be an exotic disease, and not at all the sort of thing that we needed to worry about in the UK. Not so in 2009.
Lungworm in dogs used to be known as the 'French heartworm', but recent studies have shown it now to be alive and well in the UK, with infections in dogs now occurring regularly in the Southern Counties and much more recently in the Midlands.
The main reservoir of infection seems to be the common red fox, and it may be the increasing urbanisation of the fox that is be the crucial factor in its spread.
More recent research has shown that nearly 10% of wild foxes in the UK are now infected. This varies from almost none in Scotland to as many as 23% of foxes being infected in Southern England.
Garden snails and slugs are the creatures that actually spread the parasite from the resident fox population and it is here that so many of our pet dogs start to be at risk.
How many of you wake up to find snail trails in the garden or on the patio? It's from eating snails or slugs or by licking at these trails that pet dogs can become infected.
Infection with this parasite is potentially fatal and can be difficult to spot in the early stages. Later and more serious signs of infection include coughing and difficulty breathing. Lungworm can cause a rapid heart rate, limb swelling and neurological symptoms including weakness and loss of co-ordination, but it is the cases of sudden and uncontrollable internal bleeding that are causing the most distress.
Luckily there are a number of medicines such as Advocate (Imidacloprid/Moxidectin), Panacur/Granofen/Wormazole (Fenbendazole), Milbemax (Milbemycin oxime) or Ivermectin that can provide real and lasting protection from this nasty parasite. We strongly recommend that as dog owners you make it your business to find out more about this disease in your area and make sure that your dogs are fully protected.
