PIG WELFARE, March 2009
The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC)is taking a closer look at pig welfare under the auspices of the Pigs, Poultry and Fish Standing Committee (does that make it the FAWCPPFSC? Great acronym). Specifically they are seeking views on the issues of tail docking, tooth clipping, castration, ear clipping, ear tagging, tattooing and slap marking. The contention is that appropriate environmental enrichment might reduce the need for such procedures.

BLUETONGUE update
'Take advantage and vaccinate your animals before turning them out to protect them from the threat of Bluetongue' is the message from the Joint campaign Against Bluetongue (JAB) is encouraging farmers to ensure their stock is protected before the onset of warmer spring weather and the increase in midge activity.

FARM HEALTH ALERT
The annual Disease Surveillance Report for March identifies that this is a high risk period for Navel Ill in spring-calving sucker herds and Fascioliasis associated with Hypocalcaemia in dairy cows. Pregnancy toxaemia outbreaks are expected in sheep flocks and Respiratory disease in Pig herds.

Selenium and Conception Rates in sheep
Recent work published in the Veterinary Record (February 2009) has shown that supplementing hill farm sheep with selenium six weeks before mating significantly increases their conception rates. Selenium-supplemented ewes reared 9% more lambs than untreated sheep. Selenium supplemented sheep had lower abortion rates and higher liveweights and body condition scores.
