Metacam® chewable tablets contain a non-steroidal anti-in ammatory drug (NSAID) and are used to reduce pain and inflammation in dogs.
Metacam® chewable tablets can be used for both chronic (long-term) musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, and acute (sudden and short-lived) musculoskeletal disorders, such as an injury.
Metacam tablets contain meloxicam, which belongs to a class of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Meloxicam acts by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase which is involved in the production of prostaglandins. As prostaglandins are substances that trigger inflammation, pain, exudation (fluid that leaks out of blood vessels during an inflammation) and fever, meloxicam reduces these signs of disease.
In dogs, Metacam is used to reduce post-operative pain and inflammation following orthopaedic (e.g. fracture operation) and soft tissue surgery. Moreover, metacam for dogs is used for the alleviation of inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal disorders in dogs.
Metacam® chewable tablets can be given with or without food and are flavoured so that most dogs will readily accept them. Each chewable tablet can be halved for accurate dosing according to the individual body weight of the dog.
More precise dosing may be achieved using Metacam® oral suspension for dogs. For dogs weighing less than 4 kg, the use of Metacam® oral suspension for dogs is recommended.
Metacam® chewable tablets for dogs are available in two strengths:
• 1 mg tablets
• 2.5 mg tablets
Full instructions on the use of Metacam for dogs are included in every pack, though do also follow your vets recommendations.
