Prescription-Only Treatment for Canine Cushing’s Syndrome (Hyperadrenocorticism)
Vetoryl® Flavoured Tablets are the only veterinary-licensed treatment in the UK for both pituitary-dependent and adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s syndrome) in dogs. Containing the active ingredient trilostane, Vetoryl works by blocking the production of excessive cortisol — the stress hormone that causes the wide range of clinical signs associated with the disease.
Cushing’s syndrome is a chronic endocrine condition that can significantly reduce a dog’s quality of life if left untreated. Common symptoms include increased thirst and urination, excessive appetite, panting, hair loss, pot-bellied appearance, and lethargy. Vetoryl helps to restore hormonal balance, reducing these symptoms and improving overall wellbeing.
Key Benefits:
-
Clinically proven to manage both pituitary and adrenal forms of Cushing’s syndrome
-
Flavoured tablets to aid acceptance and simplify daily dosing
-
Available in multiple strengths for accurate, weight-based dosing
-
Helps reduce excessive thirst, appetite, and urination
-
Improves skin and coat condition over time
-
Supports a better quality of life in affected dogs
Available Strengths:
-
Vetoryl 20mg – Ideal for smaller dogs or for starting treatment at lower doses
-
Vetoryl 30mg – Suitable for medium-sized dogs requiring moderate doses
-
Vetoryl 60mg – Designed for larger dogs or higher-dose requirements
Multiple strengths allow precise dose tailoring, sometimes combining tablet sizes to meet the exact daily dose your vet prescribes.
Active Ingredient:
-
Trilostane – A competitive inhibitor of the enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, which plays a key role in the synthesis of cortisol. By limiting cortisol production, trilostane helps control the symptoms and long-term effects of Cushing’s disease.
Indications:
-
Treatment of pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH)
-
Treatment of adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (ADH)
How Vetoryl Works:
Cushing’s syndrome results from an overproduction of cortisol by the adrenal glands, either due to a benign pituitary tumour (most common) or an adrenal tumour. Vetoryl inhibits cortisol production, preventing excessive hormone levels and easing the strain on a dog’s metabolism and organs.
Ongoing treatment requires regular monitoring through veterinary check-ups and blood tests to ensure optimal control and to adjust dosing if needed.
Directions for Use:
-
Give orally once daily with food, preferably in the morning
-
Dose is determined by the vet based on your dog’s weight and blood test results
-
Never alter the dose without veterinary guidance
-
Tablets should be swallowed whole — do not crush or split unless instructed
Important Safety Information:
-
Prescription Only Medicine – Veterinary (POM-V)
-
A valid veterinary prescription is required before supply
-
Do not use in pregnant or lactating bitches
-
Not suitable for dogs with liver or kidney disease without close veterinary supervision
-
Monitor for signs of under- or over-treatment such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, or loss of appetite, and contact your vet immediately if these occur
Storage:
-
Store below 25°C in the original packaging
-
Keep out of reach of children and other animals
-
Wash hands after handling the tablets
